Ads Within Ads Within Ads

I have seen three movies in the last month, and I have to tell you, the prices are out of control. I know that people in Iowa are bithcing because they now have to pay $6.00 a ticket, but let me tell you, in Massachusetts it's not $9.00, and $9.25 on week-ends!! How the hell did this happen? Seriously, why more on the week-ends? I don't get it. But here's what pisses me off to the point of writing this: there are far more ads now than there were before when we were paying less!! This is where I get confused.

So, let's break this down shot gun style. Any media uses advertising revenue to bring in funds to do whatever they do, be it TV, print, radio, or film. Not news to those of us here at BadTasteAds. They use this ad revenue to continue to put out issues or news shows or whatever, and they also use it to add new features, pay their staff, etc. I understand that advertising is here to stay, and I'm okay with that. Now, any idiot can figure out that movie theatres have our attention both before and during the show. Why not use the screen to promote a few things and make a few bucks, right? I'm still all for this. I understand the train of thought here. Here's where I get lost:

When you go to a movie theatre, you pay $9.00 a ticket. You over pay for consessions. Then you get to your seat. Depending on how early you are for the film, you have to sit through a slide show of ads that promote local businesses, etc. In many ways, it's better than staring at a blank screen or a curtain. Besides, they usually have music playing over the PA. Then the music fades, and the lights dim and you're forced to watch no fewer than three commercials. NOT PREVIEWS, COMMERCIALS. The very same ones you see on television. The very ones that aggrevate the shit out of you while watching American Idol or whatever moronic show you happen to be watching. After those few minutes of your life you'll never get back, the previews begin. Now you get hit with no fewer than three trailers for films that are usuually produced by the same people producing the film you're about to see. The film I saw last night (which I will not plug here and now) had four commercials and at least six previews. By the time the film started I couldn't remember what I had paid to see. And then during the film there is product placement EVERYWHERE! You cannot avoid it. Even if you think there's no product placement going on, don't fool yourself. The clothes the characters where, the cars they drive, the soundtrack. EVERYTHING IS FOR SALE!!!

Which brings up my point. If the theatres are making money placing ads in the slideshow, and the film industry making money by selling slots for previews (or it that the theatres, I don't know), and the film makers making money by product placement, why are we paying so much at the box office? With all the ads I'm forced to watch, I should be getting a discount on my movie ticket. Hell, I'd be willing to pay $9.25 if it meant no ads before the film. How did it happen that we end up paying more money to see more ads. It wasn't so long ago that if someone was wearing a t-shirt that had a company name on it, they got it for free as a promotional item. Today, we are willing to pay more for something BECAUSE it has that name on it. America, we need to wake up and do something about this. When did we become so easily lead? Like lambs to the slaughter and all that jazz.
