A Few Words

Out With The Old, In With The New

So, here we are, The United States of America at War with Iraq…again.  It’s been a “good” war overall with few casualties (comparably) and somewhat expedient victories.  How can any of us complain, right? Shouldn’t we all be thanking President Bush for this?  After all, pretty soon, the U.S. will be controlling all that oil.  Our gas prices should go down, and that’s worth all this death and destruction, right?  Right?

You know, I am not so sure.  I personally am more afraid of Exxon/Mobile controlling that oil than I am Saddam.  Once the U.S. has control of that crude, there will be very little competition within the country insofar as domestically controlled oil and foreign controlled oil. Here’s my prediction: our gas prices will go down at first, but once U.S. oil corps have a strong hold, those prices will skyrocket.  Why?  Because there will be no competition we, as Americans, will be forced to pay any price for gas.  We’ll have nowhere else to turn.  No other option.

And something else that really pisses me off: the misuse of the slogan “Support Our Troops.”  While there isn’t anything inherently wrong in the phrase or in the use of the phrase, there are serious issues with how it is being used these days.  Most of the time we see this phrase being used against protesters who are against the war.  HELLO!!  IDIOTS!!!  Protesting the war IS supporting our troops.  If they are not there fighting, they cannot fucking die!  If the U.S. Marines Corps as a whole went up to the Pentagon, and said, ‘Hey, we want to fight in a war.  Send us over,’ then I’d say, okay.  The people should stop protesting as much as they do.  But that isn’t how it happens.  The troops are not there because they choose to be.  They are there because someone else is making them be there. Protesting the war is supporting our troops.  Why is this concept so hard for those supporting the war to understand?

But, these aren’t my biggest concern for this article.

I live in Worcester, Massachusetts.  This New England city has been around since before the Revolutionary War and has a great history. Some of the buildings in the city have been around for a very long time, some 250 to 300 years perhaps, and are considered historical landmarks. Because these buildings are considered historical, they cannot be torn down or demolished to make room for newer, more efficient buildings.  This leaves no room for new businesses or housing all because they have a value historically.

Cut to Iraq.  There are buildings that are being completely destroyed by this “necessary” war that date back to the 1300 and 1400’s. But, they don’t matter because these buildings belong to the “enemy.”  It should bring a tear to any cultured individual’s eye whenever they see such history destroyed.  Granted, there are some who blindly agree with our Pres. that these people brought this destruction on themselves, but it is still sad that we have to destroy so much in the process.

Alas, there is nothing that can be done now.  Saving historical landmarks will never be a concern for those in war.  I understand this.  I guess so long as we don’t start burning their museums and libraries, then all is not entirely lost.  I think South Park brought all of this to summation best in a recent episode.  One of the characters went back in time to see what the founding fathers of America would have said about the current war, and found them having the same debates about the Revolutionary war.  And it was decided that America needed both the pro-war people, and the anti-war people to accomplish one very important thing.  It allowed the U.S. to stand and fight and not look like cowards, while it absolved us of any guilt and responsibility because the U.S. was also against fighting. We, in turn, became a contradiction.  Perhaps Gnoah is in the right party.
