PABAAH? So, there's this group calling themselves PABAAH (Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood) and this group is something of a watchdog group that investigates various media for Anti-American content. They have recently boycotted the film "Elf" starring Wil Farrell because Edward Asner (who plays Santa Claus) was black-listed during McCarthy-era Cold War fears, and Barenaked Ladies for their statements against the War in Iraq. Here's where I say, "What the fuck?" First of all, if you're going to have a complicated name that you're going to reduce down to an anacronym, why not come up with a cool one? Pabaah? It sounds like something my five year old nephew would come up with. Pabaah sounds like something out of the Lion King. Seriously, even some of the worst anacronyms can sound cool. NAFTA, NASA, FBI, STP. But, PABAAH? I feel that the name alone discredits everything they stand for. How can we take someone seriously, when they have such a stupid name. That's like trying to discuss a treaty with someone named Chickenshit. You lose all respect for them. But, even if we forgive them their name, their argument is fifty years dead. Anti-American? The greatest part of being in America is that we can have a discourse from whichever side of an argument we chose without fear of persecution. Missa, Steve, and I are great examples of how three differing points of view can somehow come together and not only create something, but actually enjoy doing it. Pabaah stands as a lost remnant of McCarthy-ism that wishes to punish those with views that don't jive with the status-quo. What's more anti-American than that? If Pabaah existed back before the Revolutionary War, they'd have been on the side of the British (the status-quo) and would have penalized our founding fathers for speaking out against the King. Sure, it's great to be proud of your heritage, but to deny someone their basic right of questioning or outright challenging what thier King or President is doing, is just dictatorship. Yet, they ignore the fact that they themselves are enjoying the same right they wish to deny others. With peoples fears being as out of control as they have been in recent years, the last thing America needs is someone else stirring up lies, half-truths, and accusations that creates even more fear. Sure, it is your right to boycott whatever you wish, and it is also your right to speak out loud and inform the public of what they might not know. However, when you stretch facts in order to make your argument, or worse yet, base your entire belief structure on something as out-dated as McCarthy-ism, you're nothing but a bigot in your own right and do not deserve the respect you'd normally be given. So, from me Dave Perron at BadTasteAdvertising, to all of you at PABAAH, go fuck yourselves. You're not worth the pixels in this column. Email Daive with any comments to: plstrcstr@hotmail.com
